Gospel-Chords.com Weekly Chord Progressions

01/01/2011

The chord sequence in this issue was created using the chords in the Adventures in Harmony Course. The sequence was created in less than 5 minutes. We will publish this issue weekly with a complete explanation of how the sequence was created.

HERE IS A CHORD PROGRESSION CREATED FROM SCRATCH USING OUR PATENT PENDING SYSTEM!!

In this issue we are going to create a Bass chromatic run with a constant melody suspension.

We are going to hold a note in the melody, and while we hold this note, we are going to make chord changes where the bass note descends chromatically. We are going to play different chords for every different bass note.

It is completely arbitrary which note is selected as the melody suspension note or where you start on the bass note.

In this example the suspended melody note is going to be a (Gb) and we are going to start with a Bass note of (C).

We are going to play a chromatic bass line descending all the way down to (E).

So we will have the following bass line

  (C), (B), (Bb), (A), (Ab), (A), (Gb), (F) and (E)

We could have continued with the chromatics all the way down to (Db) but we just choose to stop at (E).

This progression is in the key of (Db), and the first chord is a (C) chord. In the key of (Db) this (C) is a [Maj VII].  So our progression down to the (E) is as follows:

[Maj VII] - [VII] - [VI]- [#V] - [V]- [bV]-[IV]- [III] - [-III]

Just so we can end this progression gracefully we skip down to a [I] chord. This would be a (Db) chord since we are in the key of  (Db). We could have ended this progression anywhere and just skipped down to the (Db) to end it. You can always end any sequence on the (I) chord.

All of the chords in this sequence have the [VI] as the suspension, The [IV] in the key of (Db) is a (Gb). So all of the chords have this (Gb) on top.

All we have done is picked random chords from the course from the voicing reference volume from the chapter on harmonizing on the [IV].  We just happened to pick chords that have a bass note that corresponded to each one of notes in the chromatic descending sequence.

The sequence that we created is just one of an infinite number of possibilities with our course. For each bass note, there are probably 10-20 different possibilities so no two musicians will come up with the same sequence if they were trying to do the same thing.

The chords in this sequence were created using the following two chord voicing reference volumes:
